Are Movie Sites Worth It?
from the depends-on-who-you-ask dept
With all the talk recently of movie studios creating complex and entertaining websites to go with their movies, Business 2.0 is finally looking at whether or not it's worth it. Well, actually, they just look at the Planet of the Apes website and determine that it's not worth it. Of course, they don't make a very clear argument other than to say that most people want useful movie information (where and when it's playing, and who's in it) rather than a "community" around the movie - and that the Planet of the Apes website is probably targeted at the wrong age group. I think it's true that most people do just want that quick information, but that doesn't mean others aren't interested in the community. I don't think just because some people want to know what time a movie is, doesn't mean a community for fans isn't worthwhile - they're two completely separate things. I will admit that $100,000 on the website seems a bit high, though.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
