Compaq Busted For Sexist iPAQ Ad

from the how-sexist-was-it? dept

A woman's group has awarded it's latest "DisGraceful Award" to Microsoft and Compaq for an advertisement they ran in France for the iPAQ. The ad shows a woman using the back of an iPAQ as a mirror and says (in French): "all the functions of a PC plus others you'll discover along the way". Leaving out the idea that this ad ran only in France, I'm not convinced it's really that sexist (but what do I know, being a big dumb male). Just because the woman in the ad used it as a mirror doesn't mean that she's not fully capable of using the rest of the iPAQ. I mean, would it be just as offensive to show a similar ad where a guy uses an iPAQ to hold something in place while he repairs his car?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Where's the chill pill

I certainly didn't find it sexist, but then again I on occasion use a mirror myself. Anybody else think the negative comments funny, especially in light of all the "mirror" apps written for these things? People also wigged out about the "Simply Palm" ad with the naked woman and her PDA. Frumps.
