Ricochet Fans Vocally Lament Loss
from the fan-the-flames! dept
WWC, the major reseller of Metricom's Ricochet service, encouraged subscribers all week to email a number of different reporters to tell them how much we all miss our ricochet service. Apparently it worked with the WSJ reporter who wrote a story pointing out how vocal some Ricochet users are. They do point out that WWC "fanned the flames". The auction is tomorrow, and after multiple attempts to contact the folks running the auction I've just been told that no one who isn't a qualified bidder will be allowed into the auction - and since I don't have a handy half a million or so to plunk down into an escrow account I don't qualify as a bidder. I asked the guy about letting the press in, and he said the only way they get in is if they are also qualified bidders. It would have been great to report on the auction right from there using my Ricochet... oh wait.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
