MP3.com Sued Again

from the it-never-stops dept

I think MP3.com's biggest expense (even now that Vivendi Universal owns them) has to be legal expenses. They get sued more often than dot coms go out of business these days. The latest is from a group of independend musicians and song writers who seem to be accusing MP3.com to be partially responsible for the Napster mess. No, this doesn't make much sense, but the claim is that due to MP3.com's locker service (which, if you remember correctly only allowed people access to MP3s if they proved they had a copy of the song on CD already), they made it easier for people to take the song and dump it on Napster for "illegal" sharing. This is ridiculous. If the person had access to a CD with the song, it would have been almost as easy for them to rip it and dump it on Napster.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
