Is Max Payne A New Kind Of Video Game?
from the genre-bending.. dept
I've been reading a lot of reviews of the new incredibly hyped first-person-shooter game Max Payne, and it certainly looks pretty cool (though, I pretty much gave up first person shooters sometime after Castle Wolfenstein). This Salon article, however, looks more at how Max Payne is a very different kind of video game in a lot of ways. It almost suggests that this is a first person shooter with a conscience. It has a story (slightly beyond "kill anything that moves") with a plot and seems to be almost like a film noir version of a video game. People have written articles about this before, but perhaps video games can really start being considered an "art" like movies. People have made that claim before, but for the most part, no one really believes it yet.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

It is an excelent game that would have been better if it had been first person.
