Global Sports Moving Into Amazon's Arena

from the but-might-be-better-positioned dept

A good look at some of the moves Global Sports has made recently to expand beyond just selling sporting goods. The company, which basically builds, manages, and maintains e-commerce sites (including fulfillment and customer service) for a number of sporting goods brick-and-mortar retailers, made a deal last week with K-Mart to sell more than just sporting goods on the Bluelight.com site. This move could put them into direct competition with Amazon.com, which has done similar deals with Toys R Us and Borders. The interesting thing is that some analysts seem to feel that Global Sports is better positioned than Amazon. Part of the reason is that they, unlike Amazon and most others, didn't get caught up in all the "dot com hype" and, instead, built their business slowly and carefully (just like a smart business should). So, they're not saddled with billions in debt or excess warehouse capacity. So, when you're talking about "e-commerce survivors", it might be time to start looking at Global Sports as a possibility.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
