The Avant! Story

from the it-keeps-getting-better dept

I've been following the story of the various Avant! lawsuits since 1997, and it just keeps getting better and more interesting. Business Week is now running an article all about Avant! and its CEO, Gerry Hsu. They talk about the lawsuits (based on the fact that Avant! used code stolen from Cadence for some of their products), but the story goes well beyond that. It seems that Hsu (who was only fined for his role in the code theft, while others went to jail) also has been running the public company as if it were a sole proprietorship. He hired his son to run operations in Asia, despite having little experience, and gave him a huge starting salary and bonuses. He also made a number of questionable investments and has used Avant! to help prop up those investments. At the same time, however, he's as entrenched as he ever was on the Avant! board. While others can't believe he hasn't been fired, the board (made up mostly of insiders) is setting it up to make it nearly impossible to fire him. It's a case study in how a company should not be run.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Not a way to run a company?? Ha!

It all depends on your POV. If you are Gerry Hue, it is a GREAT way to run the firm.
