The Greatest Vendetta On Earth - Part II

from the more-twists-and-turns dept

Yesterday I posted the link to Salon's story about how Ringling Bros. circus built a huge conspiracy to prevent a writer from writing a book about them. While yesterday's story was mostly giving all of the background and introducing all of the players, part II explains what they actually did to the writer. The circus actually hired someone to befriend her, and become her "book packager". This guy would report back on all of his conversations with the writer, and tried to steer her away from writing about the circus. He also got the circus to fund two other books she wrote (to keep her busy writing non-circus focused books) - which weren't given much of a chance to sell. The combination of both of these stories makes for a fascinating read - and the lawsuit about all this hasn't even gotten going yet.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Whooooooooooooooaa

Its scary what someone at the head of a big company with lots of cash can do if you piss em off no?

Hope she (the writer and plaintiff) decides to write a book about the whole ordeal...I'd buy it.

The articles were a fascinating read...scary, but fascinating.
