HP Buys Compaq
from the consolidation dept
Remember back in July of 1999 when both Compaq and HP were interviewing the same group of candidates to become CEO of each company? Then, in July of 2000 we had an article comparing the two and it was unclear which company got the better deal. Well, now it doesn't matter any more, because the two are about to become the same company, with HP buying Compaq for about $25 billion. Of course, such a merger brings up a ton of integration questions, as well as the more general question of "why?". Expect massive layoffs from the combined companies... Update: Thanks to the reader (you know who you are) who sent me the following article from January of this year where an analyst said that HP should buy Compaq and another analyst trashes him saying it's the stupidest idea he's ever heard.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
