Gadgets Galore

from the two-for-the-price-of-one dept

Two completely separately, but equally goofy, articles about gadgets that I'm throwing into a single post for the sake of efficiency. First, is a new internet controlled remote control robot. As far as I can tell this is a bizarre robot-shaped device with an infrared output. If, before you leave your home, you point it at a device that will accept remote control commands (such as your VCR), you'll then be able to control that device over the internet - by sending commands to the robot. Seems like you have to do an awful lot of planning just to set your VCR. Why not just set it before you leave home? The other device is a handpowered cell phone charger. Crank it up for a few spins and suddenly you'll be able to talk for a few minutes on your cell phone - even if your battery is dead. The downside, though, is that it seems to charge its own system - so you have to keep it connected to the hand crank while making the call.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
