Two Interesting Tech Deals
from the catching-up dept
Two very interesting technology deals went through last week that weren't mentioned here due to the tragic events. Here's a quick catch up. American Greetings took Blue Mountain Arts off of the nearly bankrupt hands of Excite@Home for $35 million. It really was not that long ago that Excite@Home paide $780 million for the site - which never had a clear plan to make money. And people wonder why Excite@Home is in trouble? The other, more interesting deal was AskJeeves buying Teoma. We've spoken about Teoma before, as a potential competitor to Google - so it will be interesting to see what they do as part of a larger company. AskJeeves says they'll integrate Teoma's technology, while leaving it as a stand alone search site as well (I wonder how long that will last?). Hopefully this will mean that AskJeeves' searches will actually be useful. I have yet to ever use AskJeeves and find what I was looking for.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
