The Internet Is Becoming Unusable

from the run!--hide! dept

Ah, you have to love the crazy anti-virus firms. One of them has put out a ridiculous press release saying that the internet will become unusable by 2008 due to viruses. Seems like a simple case of extrapolation by these guys who need to keep the fear levels high to make their money. When confronted about the press release by the good folks at the Register, a spokesperson admitted that perhaps it was a little "alarmist". Now they tell us? What about those poor souls who gave up the internet for good after hearing that Code Red was going to kill the internet? Are they like the Y2K crazies who are still bunkered down in mountain hideouts waiting for the fallout from Y2K nuclear apocalypse to subside before venturing forth?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Another form of Nimda - very bad

    Hi, All:

Seems like a new harmful virus is popping up every day (this one just
discovered today). This one is just as detrimental as some of those that
have appeared over the last month or two. So, I'm
forwarding this email on to each of you with links to the InfoWorld site and
the Symantec site for more info, and will encourage all of you to do a "Live
Update" and a system scan right now, and maybe set your Live Update schedule
    to update more often.

    Good luck, and be virus-free!!!

    Cottage Industry

I wonder if virus security companies (i.e. symantec) ever write and release viruses themselves. It'd be a good buisness practice, after all.

    Re: Cottage Industry

Which is why I never trust Symantec's site or McAfee's when they talk about just how "scary" the new virus is.
