The Latest On Free Wireless Access

from the ISPs-getting-angrier dept

Well, this is no surprise. News.com finally came out with their version of the article about people who set up a free wireless internet access point in their homes (everyone else had already written their version of the article). The main difference with this one, is that they went and spoke with some broadband ISPs and they're pissed off. They're going to start looking for ways to crack down on people setting up a WiFi network for their neighbors to use.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I hope this doesn't lead to a crack down on people having home networks on a single IP. Something tells me Pacbell is not smart enough to do this.

The single IP solution won't work... They'll have to limit your bandwidth or something.... Oops, can't download that file today, you've exceeded your limit.... Or you're bits will be meted out like your electric bill. Start investing in compression technology! :P
