Kaiser Permanente Buys Webvan Software, Warehouse

from the will-they-deliver-prescription-drugs-in-funky-trucks? dept

Seems like Louis Borders didn't win his bid for Webvan's software. Instead, the winning bid went to everyone's favorite HMO, Kaiser Permanente. What exactly does a huge HMO want with a huge warehouse and e-commerce and logistics software? That's anyone's guess. I doubt they'll start letting me order my prescriptions online to be delivered by friendly van drivers in funky painted vans. The theory is that they'll use it to distribute medical supplies to their many facilities. Of course, Kaiser has the reputation of automating the world of medicine, so maybe they'll use the crazy logistics of the warehouse to route patients through their appointments more "efficiently". I can't wait for my next doctor's appointment where they'll send me to Oakland, load me up on a conveyor belt and zip me through the blood pressure section, the heart rate section, the weight section, eyesite section, etc. and then dump me out on the loading dock, healthy as can be.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
