Online Credit Card Fraud Increasing

from the blame-the-merchants! dept

A few years ago I worked at an e-commerce startup, and the number of fraudulent credit cards that made it through the purchase process was staggering. Apparently, it's only been getting worse and worse. To make matters worse for the e-commerce companies, the credit card companies are making the merchants liable for fraudulent credit cards. It's hurting a lot of e-commerce merchants, who have to come to terms with the fact that nearly 5% of what they "sell", may actually be "stolen". The merchants say that the credit card companies are doing nothing to help the situation - but Visa and MasterCard deny this. They're both working on new systems that will make you have a password with your credit card. I wonder how many people will use this - and how many people will just think it's annoying. I'm still waiting for credit card readers to come standard with computers.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
