Tickle Me Elmo Offering Up Prizes

from the long-lines-at-the-toy-store dept

The folks who brought you "Tickle Me Elmo" (just how many Sesame Street related stories are we going to have this week?), have added a new twist to the extremely popular toy known mainly for causing headaches to parents (both from its incessant giggling, and the problem of actually finding one for screaming kids). The new Elmos are programmed to change their recordings on January 9, 2002. For some folks that means they'll have won a prize. The winners can get a $200,000 check toward the purchase of a new house, $60,000 in savings bonds for their child's education, a Volkswagen Beetle, a new PC and a ride-on battery-operated VW car for the child. Tragically, the VW's are decorated with an "Elmo-theme". I just wonder (1) how many of the toys will be broken by the time January 9 rolls around and (2) how many kids playing with them will be too young to understand why Elmo is reading out legalese instead of giggling.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
