Tough Market For Software Stores

from the why-bother? dept

I remember when driving over to the local Egghead store was an adventure. That seems like such a long time ago. I stopped going to software stores long before Egghead went web-only (and then eventually nowhere). News.com now has a story about the death of stores that focused only on selling software. The few that are left mainly only sell console games. PC software either comes bundled with the computer, is downloaded, or people pick it up at a Best Buy, Fry's, Office Depot, or other electronics or office supply store. Most of this is obvious, but the story is a bit nostalgiac for anyone who used to wander through the aisles of software stores trying to figure out what cool software they could buy for their computer.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Support.com Parnters with Office Depot

Well it looks like Office Depot is trying to pump new air into their hallways. I ran across some interesting information yesterday: Support.com, a subsidiary of SupportSoft Inc., a publically traded company (NasdaqGS:SPRT) has partnered with Office Depot. I have to say however, as exciting as this news is, I am troubled by the way, in which it was released. I found out through a rather unprofessional channel- that is to say- I think they published the information in the wrong place. I found their training material for Office Depot employees online. Check out this link (www.support.com/catalog/officedepot). For me this begs the question: should this be public knowledge yet?
