Topic Of The Month: Remote Printing

from the who-knew-it-was-such-a-big-deal? dept

It was just last week we spoke about the "PrintMe" standard that was being endorsed by a number of companies (including Adobe) to allow people to print from whatever device they had to any print shop that had a PrintMe enabled device. Now, Adobe has announced their PDF Transit software, which appears targeted at the same market. With the PDF transit software, any user will be able to locate a nearby printshop and print out whatever they are working on. Of course, the document will be transmitted in PDF format to avoid having to deal with version problems and different fonts and formatting (though, my experience with PDF formating has shown that it doesn't always come out the way you want either). It's unclear if the PDF Transit and PrintMe offerings are designed to work together, but it would be pretty shortsighted if they didn't.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Apple vs. Adboe

This is one more piece of evidence that the relationship between Apple and Adobe isn't a happy one. Apple is developing iPhoto; Adobe gets pissed and delays Photoshop for OSX, threatening to cancel it. Apple endorses PrintMe; Adobe creates a competing standard.

Will photoshop users be stuck in OS9.2 forever?
