VoiceStream Buys MobileStar

from the still-going... dept

On Friday there were a number of articles about how MobileStar's network was suddenly and mysteriously turned back on, despite the fact that they had laid everyone off. Today we discover that VoiceStream Wireless wants to buy MobileStar (according to the registration required NY Times) and has dumped some money on them to keep the network running until a deal is finalized. It would be nice if services like MobileStar really did appear on a widespread scale, but I'm afraid that it's going to be difficult to offer it cost effectively enough in a way that people will actually be willing to pay to use it. Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I'm surprised to see VS as the buyer. They have put so much into their GPRS roll out, this seems like a distraction. There isn't a clear benefit for their existing user base, so they must see it as long term diversification move.
