Object-To-Object E-commerce

from the business-model-day dept

I guess today is micropayment business model day. Following on the penny-a-page business model idea we just posted, here's news that Accenture (should I call them Andersen Consulting, just to piss them off?) is working on systems to let objects make micropayments between each other. The idea is that more things could be offered using a service pricing model - where people pay based on exactly how much they use the product. An example is pricing car insurance based on how many miles you drive (or how fast you drive). Again, I'm not sure how well this would work. It seems that many people like the stability of flat-rate pricing for many things. Variable, use-based pricing tends to stress people out, and make them less likely to use the services being offered.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    UBIK!

For extreme per-use pricing, see UBIK by Philip K. Dick.

Nothing like having to pay your door to let you out of your apartment.
