No More Dot Com Stunts

from the too-bad,-they-were-easy-pickings dept

The age of dot com stunts has been declared dead. Of course, that doesn't explain things like the free Prozac we mentioned below. Or the eBay/Burger King Deal... or any number of other publicity stunts that are still appearing. However, I guess those are a bit more normal, compared to the silliness we were getting last year. There are a number of reasons why we're seeing fewer publicity stunts. There are fewer startups out there trying to gain attention of course, and those that are around really don't have too much money to just toss around on some silly publicity stunt. Plus, there's enough evidence that those publicity stunts don't really do very much for a company. They might get a few more people to recognize your brand, but it's not clear if they do anything to actually help something important, such as sales.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
