Unlearning The Past
from the so-says-a-teacher... dept
Bill Gurley's latest column is telling entrepreneurs that they need to forget the lessons they learned in the past five years, because they're bad habits. I think anyone with half a brain already knows that. He then goes on to say that it's tough to unlearn those things - which I don't think is true at all. There are a couple of problems here. First, Gurley is one of the guys who was out there promoting all of those "new rules" he now wants us to unlearn. Second, he misses the point he made in his own article - which is that the real entrepreneurs realized his points long ago and aren't approaching him and his VC buddies for money anymore. They're out there trying to building something real, with as little money as possible - rather than wasting their time running up and down Sand Hill listening to pompous VCs tell them what they need to learn or unlearn about the world today.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

NPR Radio Call In
One college-student caller called in and said she'd just finished an economics exam, and everything that was happening in the real-world internet boom didn't quite jive with they keynesian supply-and-demand stuff she'd been learning.
The "expert" on the radio show said that her professor was an idiot for still teaching that stuff, and that she was stupid for listening to him and not dropping the class.
"experts...."
