Orbitz Hijacking Cursors At Competing Sites

from the marketing-gimmicks dept

Orbitz has signed a deal with Comet Systems so that anyone who has the Comet software installed (and many people do) will see their cursor turn into Orbitz fare info while they're surfing at Travelocity or Expedia. I don't know about most people, but I think that would freak me out a bit, to see my mouse displaying other fare data from a competing site.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    boycott

I already know better than to have Comet Cursor installed. Now that I know that Orbitz is dealing with them, I will make sure my future airline tickets purchases are from anyone but them. (I also have some X10 stuff, but since they've gone mad with popups I'm not buying any more.)

Yeah screw that stupid comet shit. Want to have some fun? Try installing it and removing it later. The thing literally re-installs itself after you hit del! It resides in all sorts of places on your hd and is just a nasty worthless ad generator. do yourselves a favor and DO NOT install it
