The Swatch Approach To Mobile Devices
from the what's-going-on-here? dept
Okay, I've read this article a few times now, and I'm still not sure I know what this company is really selling. The company is a startup called IXI Wireless, and they have some sort of "Personal Mobile Gateway" that will let any device connect to various wireless networks. The idea is that the gateway is small enough to fit into a purse or a wallet (so it would have to be very very small) and could connect to a variety of different networks. Then, any device would just have to connect with the gateway to have a wireless connection. So, instead of building wireless capabilities into every device, you just need to make sure it can talk to the gateway. At least, I think that's what's happening. It's an interesting idea, but one that might just add a layer of complexity people aren't willing to accept.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
