Register To Link To KPMG

from the return-of-the-clueless dept

Every once in a while you hear a story like this one, where someone thinks they can tell you what you can and can't link to. While the U.S. government seems to be getting away with it in regards to links to DeCSS, it's pretty tricky for anyone else. So, when KPMG asked someone to sign a "link agreement" before he could continue to link to their site, he properly responded by telling them to go away. Apparently, it's become quite the popular thing now to link to KPMG just to bug them. Yet another reason why lawyers shouldn't be able to surf the internet without a license.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Have you heard the theme song?

It's hilarious. It's in the article. You should listen.

Re: Have you heard the theme song?

Heh. Yeah, I actually heard the song a while back (I think it was in NTK), and while I haven't heard it in a few months, it's still been permanently branded into my brain...

    It's all a marketing ploy!

Ok here's a twist that you probably didn't think of. Think of how search engines work now adays.. that's right, one of the more powerful variables is who links to your site.

Think KPMG will move in in the rankings because of this ploy?

Indeed! That's a great conspiracy theory. Wish I had thought of that... If it were even remotely close to true KPMG would be brilliant. I find it highly unlikely, though. Still, one can dream...
