Broadband Losers Had No Backbone
from the take-the-blame-off-of-me? dept
In an attempt to take some of the blame off of me and my broadband destroying powers, ZDNet has an article suggesting that the reason all these broadband providers are failing is because they don't own the backbone pipes of their connection. They were all reliant on a larger player (who was also a competitor) who did own the backbone. Of course, that doesn't necessarily explain why some companies will survive, or why wireless services like both Sprint & AT&T Fixed Wireless (along with Metricom) failed (though, obviously, there are plenty of other reasons for those too). I think it's clear that it was the convergence of a number of factors (often including my presence as a customer) that caused many of these services to fail. To pin it all on one simple factor would unerestimate the number of blunders or bad circumstances that destroyed a lot of formerly promising companies.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
