Sonicblue Releases Home Music Hub
from the wasn't-that-supposed-to-be-Apple's-job? dept
Sonicblue must love lawsuits. They're already being sued by the networks for their Replay digital video recorder, while at the same time they're suing Tivo for patent infringement, and now they're releasing a home music hub device which is almost guaranteed to come with its own personal lawsuit. The device lets your rip CDs into MP3s, as well as burn CDs. At the same time it has a 40 gig hard drive to store all those MP3s. Add to that a modem for CDDB lookups, and eventually the ability to share and trade music with others who have the "Advanced Digital Audio Center" - and you have a magnet for RIAA lawyers. The system does sound pretty cool, though. It will also let users stream music directly from the device if you wanted to broadcast your own radio station. In other words, they've made a device (which is too expensive at $1,500) that does just about everything you would want a MP3/CD audio player to do. Of course, thanks to Universal, you won't be able to play a number of "copy protected" CDs on your new $1,500 CD player. That should make for happy customers.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
