Power Line Connectivity
from the I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it dept
For years I've been reading stories about how power line connectivity could be a serious broadband alternative to DSL or cable modem service using your regular power lines. Every time I read one of those articles I also hear about how experiments have shown that it really doesn't work. If it's been talked about for so many years, and there's still no proof-of-concept, I'm no longer holding my breath that it will ever work. However, this article (again) claims that it's really close (really) to being a reality in the US. This strikes me as particularly odd, since all the other reports I had read said it made a lot more sense in Europe - and it was unlikely to ever work in the US.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Networking through the powerlines in the streets will never happen (unless its through the fiber line running down the middle of them). Networking through the power wiring in your home is already working, but its unclear whether this will ever get any significant traction given the growing wireless alternatives.
