Just A Reminder: Microsoft Passport Sucks

from the as-if-you-didn't-know dept

Ah. So, I just start skimming the latest news and right at the top what do I find but two stories reminding us all how badly Microsoft Passport sucks. First, there was a flaw where it diverted Hotmail users into a "test" account where they could send out emails from the account. No big deal really, but imagine that was your bank account that Microsoft let everyone access... Second, we find out that (thankfully) EPIC is asking law enforcement agencies in all 50 states to examine Passport because it "exposes consumers to fraud, junk electronic mail and identity theft."

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    just goes to show

you should never use the words "Microsoft" and "security" in the same sentence. unless you include the word "nonexistant" or "incompetent"

    Re: just goes to show

Personally, I have no issues with giving Microsoft my personal data. The whole benefit of the Internet is frictionless transactions. I trust Microsoft a hell of a lot more than some online resellers...

    Most secure OS ever

Isn't MS hyping XP as the most secure OS ever?
