IBM Designs Changing Computer
from the it's-a-PDA,-no,-a-laptop,-no,-a-desktop dept
IBM's research group has put together an intersting "changeable" computing concept called the Meta Pad. It's basically the core parts of a computer in a very small package that can be moved around and plugged into a number of different "devices" that will become that computer. So, when you're at home, you could plug it into your desktop "accessory" and you have access to your computer as a desktop. On the road you could plug it into a laptop accessory, and it works as a laptop. Or, while in a meeting, plug it into the PDA accessory, and it works as a PDA. Basically, you have a computer that can change to whatever form factor is most appropriate for the setting. It seems like a pretty cool idea - but one that won't actually be offered to consumers for quite some time (if ever).Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
