Dot Com Super Bowl Ads Did Nothing Special For Traffic

from the oh-well dept

Wasn't the whole point of having a Super Bowl ad for a dot com to drive traffic to that site? Well, it sounds like it didn't really work for most sites. The exception was (unfortunately) mLife, who drew the most traffic following their ad (though, hopefully from people who wanted to yell at AT&T Wireless for being really really lame). HotJobs, Monster.com, and E*Trade all saw their traffic go down on Sunday, as compared to the day before the Super Bowl.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

This was an awful article. Web-site traffic always goes down on a Sunday, particularly when there's something happening that day. And besides, this was the best Super Bowl in years - who's going to see an advert at half-time and then rush off as soon as the field goal is kicked to go and surf to the web-site? The question to ask is what were traffic levels on Monday?
