How Do You Respond To Major Vulnerabilities?

So, I've been reading all day about people flipping out about the SNMP vulnerabilities - and to be sure, it is probably a big deal. However, I find it amusing that most news sources are running stories that scream about the sky falling. Meanwhile, the Register, which I've heard referred to (unfairly, I think) as "fake news" actually has a very useful article telling people what they need to do to protect themselves (in most cases nothing, so stay calm).
