Patents Matter Because Someone Might Sue You

An odd column over at News.com talking about why companies shouldn't ignore patents. Instead of talking about how patents are useful tools for protecting intellectual property, all he talks about is how you might get sued for violating some patent if you ignore patents. Maybe that's because he's admitting that patents really aren't that useful for protecting intellectual property - and instead are simply used as bargaining chips against competitors and for frivolous lawsuits. While he doesn't seem to be blaming patent law, it seems to me that the article itself is a huge indictment of patent law. It says that patents are pretty much useless, except for random lawsuits.
