Tech Toys? Too Expensive

from the not-worth-it-any-more dept

Remember when we were all going to have computer powered toys that could do everything (and connect to the internet when we weren't around to learn even more things they could do)? Well, put off that vision for a while. It seems that this year's technology pavilion at the American International Toy Fair wasn't very well attended. Intel, who had been big promoters of the space are now saying they don't see how to make money off of it. Sony, who is still hyping it's Aibo said the "timing wasn't right" for this year's show (what, they had to wash their hair?). Anyway, the most basic explanation (and the most obvious) comes near the bottom of the article. People don't want to spend $1,000 on their toys. Especially when it's likely that your kid will break and/or get bored with them within the first week.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
