Tech Companies Build Their Own Job Site
from the a-solution-by-collusion dept
A bunch of high tech companies are banding together to try to put Techdirt's
career center out of business. Well, actually, that's probably not true. But, a bunch of tech companies that are sick of paying ridiculous fees to places like Monster.com and HotJobs have banded together and kicked in some money to set up
a not-for-profit competing site that simply acts as a search engine for job postings, and will link searchers directly to company sites - thus cutting out the expensive dot com middleman. Interestingly, the group putting the site together is run by a former Monster.com President. It's unclear whether or not enough people will learn about
DirectEmployers to take a real cut out of the business of those other sites - but maybe Yahoo! was a bit hasty in shelling out millions for HotJobs.
Update: Okay, here's a different article about
the same site that explains that it still costs money (quite a bit, actually) to have your site scraped by DirectEmployers. It would seem to me that this wouldn't be too difficult to build as an open search engine, that doesn't require companies to pay.
