Just What We Need: Another Tech Magazine
from the go-away,-please dept
For years we have been complaining here about all the annoying technology magazines. Finally, most of them have been going out of business. So, what's the last thing you'd expect? A new "hip" tech magazine. But, that's what we're about to get. I'm prepared to be amazingly underwhelmed. The project is being put together by folks who are famous for overhyping everything they get near. This includes David Bunnell of Upside fame and Fred Davis of Wired (among others). They've (what were they thinking??) brought in Michael Tchong to run the thing. I still can't believe anyone takes Tchong seriously after he tried to hype our way back to a dot com bubble last year. Reading the article and listening to the idiotic quotes they spout out makes you wonder if these guys have the ability for any critical thought at all, or if they only know hype. It's going to be the Rolling Stone of the tech world. Yeah, right. It's going to be the Maxim of the tech world. Okay, sure. I predict that this new magazine doesn't last all that long.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
