Nintendo Killed My Son

from the our-litigious-society. dept

Rule number one if something bad happens to you: figure out how to blame a big company with lots of money and sue them. A woman is now suing Nintendo after her 30-year-old son (who has a history of seizures) had one during a marathon Nintendo playing session, banged his head on a table, and died. While it's certainly unfortunate that someone died, it seems like a bit of a stretch to then go and sue Nintendo. Apparently all Nintendo games carry a huge warning for anyone who has had seizures that they shouldn't play. The article also points out that it's a bit silly to sue for his lost future wages, since this was a 30 year old guy who lived at home and played Nintendo 48 hours a week.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    SIGH

Why is it now that in (it seems to me) EVERY SINGLE tragedy that happens the very FIRST sound you hear is "CHACHING" ????

I have to wonder sometimes if these people are feeling any grief or remorse....or if it is totally overwhelmed by greed.

    Oops

Sorry Ma'am, Nintendo doesn't sell tables.

Where was the table? And if he's prone to seizures, why's he playing videogames?

The fact that every game carries one is part of the problem because most games don't and won't cause seizures. Yet game manufacturers slap that label on them all, rendering the seizure warning completely useless
