Yet another article about the music industry and copy protection schemes. This one comes from Salon and while it rambles a bit in places brings up some points that haven't been covered in detail elsewhere. They compare what's happening today in the music industry with what happened a decade or so ago with copy protection schemes for software - which mostly ended up being annoying and pissing off customers so much that vendors gave up. They also point out that this is probably an impossible battle for the music industry. No matter what copy protection scheme they come up with there's a way around it. No matter what Congress decides the law should be, people will still copy music. There's a quote in the article saying that Congress might as well "legislate that water has to run uphill". There's another good quote saying that society needs to "either give up on copy protection or the general-purpose PC and the Net". It amazes me that the music industry still seems to think they can push back the tide.
