Get The Latest Stephen King Book At Your Local Phone Booth

from the Stephen-King-and-his-weird-book-promotions dept

Stephen King seems to have a thing for doing odd book promotions. He, of course, made lots of news for his various attempts at publishing ebooks (with varying degrees of success or failure depending on who you talk to). Now, the latest, is this plan to allow people with PDAs to beam a section from his latest book to their Palm devices as they walk by certain telephone booths in Manhattan. There will be posters near the telephone booths telling you can beam part of the book to your PDA and explaining how it works. I wonder how long it will be until someone hacks the system so that it downloads porn instead...

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Ok, I really appreciate the effort to try something new to stimulate the ebook phenomenon, but I can't help but fear that this will just turn into another failure that the publishing industry can enlist as an excuse for not advancing ebooks. :(

      Re: No Subject Given

Ebooks fail on their own merits. This is just an example of King caring more about publicity than writing good books. At least this time he's not blatantly gouging his readership.
