Debunking The Digital Divide

from the interesting dept

I'm still not sure where I stand on this, but more data is always useful. Here's an article that looks at some of the various studies and shows why the "digital divide" probably isn't as big a problem as many people are claiming. The article makes two main arguments: first, it shows stats saying that minorities have been greatly increasing their computer literacy rates over the past few years. Second, it debunks the theory that wage inequality has risen over the past two decades due to computers. They point out that most of the gap in wage inequality grew in the 80s and not the 90s. Though, in the interest of fairness, he also mentions that some economists say that the overall good economy pushed up the lower end wages - and that computer skills might still increase the wage gap. An interesting article no matter what you believe.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
