Scannable Drivers Licenses Mean Less Privacy

from the you-have-no-privacy-anywhere dept

Well, we all might as well stay home, I guess. Following on the post earlier today about how Harrah's uses data mining on their customers' frequent gambler cards, here's a scary story about how almost any retail establishment can get all sorts of valuable marketing data from you by scanning your driver's license. They talk about a bar that officially scans your license to make sure you're really 21, but then keeps the data about you. They've used that data to see what sort of demographics they have at the bar on different nights based on different entertainment - but even scarier is that they've used it for direct marketing purposes. Thanks to that scan, they've also got your home address. So, suddenly they can remind you each time the band you saw last time is playing again.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
