First Three Segways Sold For Over $100,000
from the some-people-have-too-much-money dept
I'm still somewhat surprised about this one. The famous "first three" Segways that were auctioned off on Amazon, all appear to have sold for over $100,000. How stupid does this seem? By the end of the year, apparently, you'll be able to buy one for $3,000. Already there are industrial Segways that are selling in the range of $10,000. You're still not allowed to use Segways in many states - and yet three people may be willing to pay over $100,000 for one. Doesn't seem all that rational. It will be unique and hold its value for a few months - at which point it will plummet. Doesn't seem like the wisest investment. Of course, some of the bids may turn out to be pranks - but at least one of the bidders has confirmed that he's for real.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

$90k+ donation
If they couldn't write off most of the money, why would they pay $100+k for one of the Segways?

flawed, as usual
that's b/c it's not an investment, Mike.
i guess you are one of those people who thinks buying a car or a house is an investment too, right?
this is a purchase, maybe an attempt at giving to charity, but not a financial instrument.
