Advertisers To Take Over Browsers

from the just-what-we-need dept

Ah. Advertising going one step further. I remember a while back when I thought Neoplanet was going a little too far in offering "customized" browsers that companies could offer surfers. Now, apparently, a new company has created some technology to automatically customize browsers on the fly. So, the next time you go to weather.com, your browser might suddenly become the "weather.com browser" complete with its own toolbar and various other changes. I could actually see how this technology might be useful on some sites - but the potential (and likelihood) of misuse by advertisers is a little scary. Of course, the company claims it will be easy to turn off the software to prevent you from having to suffer through these multi-themed browsers.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Advertising Morals

Hell, consider it a done deal. This will be one time I'm *glad* my Opera probably won't work at a website.
