Sizing Up The Wireless Market: Is Nextel First To Be Bought?

from the who-knows dept

There's been a ton of talk recently about how the various wireless carriers are going to all start buying each other up soon. Red Herring shows up with their prediction that the first to go will be Nextel. The reasoning from the Herring is that Nextel is very cheap right now - and they're one of the only carriers that has really gotten traction in the business market. Many people love their whole "push to talk" deal. Of course, the biggest stumbling block (and the reason why I think they might not be the "first" to fall) is the fact that Nextel is using a different standard than any other company. So, anyone who bought them would have to run two separate technologies for at least some period of time. It certainly makes sense for the various TDMA/GPRS players (AT&T, Cingluar, Voicestream) or CDMA players (Verizon, SprintPCS) to merge among themselves, before they start salivating over Nextel's business customers.
