Sizing Up The Wireless Market: Is Nextel First To Be Bought?
from the who-knows dept
There's been a ton of talk recently about how the various wireless carriers are going to all start buying each other up soon. Red Herring shows up with their prediction that the first to go will be Nextel. The reasoning from the Herring is that Nextel is very cheap right now - and they're one of the only carriers that has really gotten traction in the business market. Many people love their whole "push to talk" deal. Of course, the biggest stumbling block (and the reason why I think they might not be the "first" to fall) is the fact that Nextel is using a different standard than any other company. So, anyone who bought them would have to run two separate technologies for at least some period of time. It certainly makes sense for the various TDMA/GPRS players (AT&T, Cingluar, Voicestream) or CDMA players (Verizon, SprintPCS) to merge among themselves, before they start salivating over Nextel's business customers.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
