Satellite Radio vs. WiFi
from the fight-it-out dept
Those satellite radio guys sure like to run to the government a lot to protect their spectrum from non-existant problems. A few months ago they were complaining to the government about cellular carriers who's spectrum might possibly one day interfere with the satellite radio spectrum. Now, they're doing the same thing with WiFi companies. They admit there isn't any interference right now, but because there might be one day, they suddenly want the spectrum used in 802.11 products to be regulated. Part of the reason 802.11 technologies are so inexpensive and have been adopted so widely is that the spectrum isn't regulated. The article quotes a number of 802.11-based companies who are not happy about this - but it appears that the satellite radio guys have a much stronger government connection and could very well win.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
