Users Of Dead Online Storage Sites Out Of Luck
from the too-bad dept
I've complained in the past about what PhotoPoint did to their customers (people were paying $20/year to store their photos, and suddenly the company shut down with no warning - only to come back a few months later asking for a one time payment of $25 to get their photos back). Here's an article saying that there really aren't any laws protecting customers against such a thing. For the most part, they're just out of luck. While I can understand this when it comes to free sites, I do wonder about the people who had paid money to PhotoPoint - and then were being asked for more money to get their photos back. I know that many ASPs that provide services for businesses have escrow agreements for just this reason. Perhaps individuals will start demanding that of online services as well.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
