Technology Helping To Find Kidnap Victims

from the see,-technology-is-useful dept

Here's a NY Times article about how various technologies have vastly improved the ability of police to find kidnapped children. Over the past few years, a much larger percentage of kidnapped children have been found. The article talks about web databases that many people search when they become suspicious. They also say technology lets them get "missing children" posters out to more locations much faster (which has led to many captured abductors). Finally, tools like Photoshop help to make "aged" photographs of children who have been kidnapped and who have grown over time. I was quite surprised to find out that over 93% of kidnapped children are found these days (compared to 62% a decade ago). In cases where the kidnapper is not a family member, the recovery rate has jumped from only 35% to about 90%.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
