The Copyright Crusade

from the so-it-goes dept

Peter F Bradshaw writes "A paper, from a consultant to the film and music industries, details the type of thinking (warning: pdf file) with regards to such issues as file sharing, the DMCA and Digital Rights Management (DRM). Included are such gems as: "DRM's most effective use will be to educate people as to what their legal rights and restrictions actually are...." and: "Moreover, DRM has the greatest odds of being effective if it is introduced subtly, so as not to present an obvious target...." It also discusses why these industries badly want to convert your general purpose computer into a purpose built media player via the CBDTPA bill even though the user may have never performed a copyright violation. I bleieve that this document gives a good road map of what we can expect to hear from the medai industries in the future." I'm not sure how old this paper is (Viant, themselves a struggling shell of what they used to be in the dot com days, recently got purchased). The document is 75 pages, so it's not a quick read, but it does look interesting.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
