Yet Another Music Service
from the nice-try dept
Each time a new major-label backed music service gets introduced, someone with too much PR on the brain announces that this one will change everything. So, it's no surprise to see EMI and Liquid Audio announcing that their new music service, BurnItFirst is going to revolutionize the online music business. The innovation this time is that they finally let people burn their own CD or transfer the music to certain digital devices. Though, it's very limited - and you still have to pay $9.95/month to get only 20 songs. I'm not sure it really qualifies as "a completely new model", as the Liquid Audio VP claims. All of these systems miss that one of the great things about any of the music sharing programs was the ability to experiment with new music. Because the labels are so greedy, they don't realize that letting people experiment with music brings new fans who are willing to spend money on the music.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
