Wireless Displacing Second Line

Wireless phones won't completely replace landline phones in the US, but along with broadband connections, they are cutting into sales of second phone lines. The threat to landline service is greater in countries with more mature wireless networks or less developed wireline services than the US. One big advantage of mobile phones is that they are bundled with more features than landline phones including caller ID and free long distance. It seems that quality of service and coverage are the two factors keeping subscribers from completely ditching landlines.

But the writing must be on the wall. Just last night I noticed a commercial (I think it was one of AT&T's) announcing the latest, greatest, anywhere, any time, dirt cheap offer - the fine print reading as long as both Point A and Point B terminate at twisted pairs. Anticipating some surplus copper and glass, perhaps?

Pacbell pissed me off so much that I made the jump to wireless and vowed never again to subscribe to the local phone monopoly.

I wonder how many people don't have a landline... It's not easy to get DSL w/o a landline, although it is possible.
